Energy Storage Management System (POIR)

CIM-mes, in collaboration with PGE Energia Odnawialna S.A., is carrying out a research project titled “Energy storage system adapting a PV farm for operation in smart power grids,” with the acronym GridStorPV, co-financed by the National Center for Research and Development under the PBSE program, Measure 1.2 of the Operational Program “Sectoral R&D Programs.”
The project aims todevelop services for stabilizing and regulating the operation of medium-voltage distribution grids (system services) using energy storage systems based on lithium-ion cells. Currently, there is a continuous increase in the installed capacity of unstable energy sources (wind and solar energy), which requires the development of new methods for stabilizing the operation of electrical grids, particularly medium-voltage grids. The stabilization methods used to date, which rely on large power generation units with sufficient power reserves, are insufficient and inefficient. To reduce energy losses and associated costs, stabilization should take place as close as possible to the unstable energy sources and automatically adapt to local grid conditions.
The developed energy storage system, together with an advanced control system developed by CIM-mes Projekt, will ensure the provision of a range of system services tailored to user requirements. The project also involves developing a billing model with distribution system operators (DSOs) and other technical components enabling the effective provision of such services, which will consequently result in the delivery of high-quality electricity to end-users in terms of its parameters and supply continuity.
As part of the project, a technology demonstrator will be built in the form of an energy storage facility with a capacity of 500 kVA and 750 kWh located near an existing 500 kW solar power plant. Additionally, elements of the distribution network will be equipped with metering infrastructure that transmits information on the current state of the network to the energy storage facility, whose control system will attempt to automatically respond to any disruptions in its stable operation, ensuring the provision of necessary system services to local distribution network operators (DNOs). The role of CIM-mes Projekt is to develop a master management system for the services provided by the storage facility, which, by optimizing its operation, will enable the highest possible return on investment in this type of equipment.
