Holographic goggles

Holographic goggles (ESA)

CIM-mes together with SKA-Polska (coordinator) developed a new type of holographic goggles called "Holographic Wearable Display for Manual Assembly Support" funded by the European Space Agency (ESA). The main distinguishing feature of this solution in relation to existing products (e.g. Microsoft HoloLens) is the fully three-dimensional imaging using Spatial Light Modulator (SLM).

The SLM module allows to electronically control the phase shift of the light that falls on it, so it works like variable lens of any possible geometry. This makes it possible to generate an image in many focus planes and, as a result, the human eye "sees" the depth of the image. Competitive solutions create only 3D illusion using stereoscopic imaging - by sending different images to both eyes. These images are in this the same plane of focus (usually infinity), which causes dissonance in the image of the brain and in effect can result in rapid tiredness of the user or headache. Holographic imaging with the use of SLM does not have this problem and it can also be used when performing complex technical operations, in which high precision, no mistakes and quick implementation time are necessary - this type of operations are e.g. in space, or when assembling highly-responsible machine components (e.g. aircraft engines).

The role of CIM-mes in this project is the mechanical design of the goggles and their optimization in terms of use and production.
